WILLIAM lV KING OF ENGLAND – DUKE OF CLARENCE BMM08

$39.95

WILLIAM IV, BORN AUGUST 21, 1765, WAS THE THIRD SON OF KING GEORGE III AND QUEEN CHARLOTTE. HE SUCCEEDED HIS BROTHER, GEORGE IV AS KING IN 1830, AND WAS WELCOMED WITH OPEN ARMS BY THE BRITISH PUBLIC.
WHEN WILLIAM WAS BORN IN 1765, HE WAS FORTH IN LINE FOR THE BRITISH THRONE AND WOULD BE ONE OF 15 ROYAL CHILDREN. THERE WAS NO PARTICULAR REASON TO SUPPOSE THAT HE WOULD EVER BE KING. THUS HIS UPBRINGING WAS THAT OF A PRINCE AND NOT OF A FUTURE KING. EARLY ON HE WAS AIMED FOR THE ROYAL NAVY.
KNOWN AS THE “SAILOR KING”, WILLIAM ENTERED THE ROYAL NAVY IN 1779 AT AGE 13 AS A MIDSHIPMAN, AND WAS PRESENT AT THE BATTLE OF CAPE ST.VINCENT. HIS EXPERIENCES IN THE NAVY SEEM TO HAVE BEEN LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN THOSE OF OTHER SAILORS, DOING HIS SHARE OF THE COOKING AND GETTING ARRESTED WITH HIS SHIPMATES AFTER A DRUNKEN BRAWL ON GIBRALTAR.
HE SERVED IN NEW YORK DURING THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE. WHILE THE PRINCE WAS IN AMERICA, GEORGE WASHINGTON APPROVED A PLOT TO KIDNAP HIM, WRITING “THE SPIRIT OF ENTERPRISE SO CONSPICUOUS IN YOUR PLAN FOR SURPRISING IN THEIR QUARTERS AND BRINGING OFF THE PRINCE WILLIAM HENRY AND ADMIRAL DIGBY MERITS APPLAUSE; AND YOU HAVE MY AUTHORITY TO MAKE THE ATTEMPT IN ANY MANNER, AND AT SUCH A TIME, AS YOU MAY DIRECT. I AM FULLY PERSUADED, THAT IT IS UNNECESSARY TO CAUTION YOU AGAINST OFFERING INSULT OR INDIGNITY TO THE PERSONS OF THE PRINCE OR ADMIRAL…” The plot did not come to fruition; the British heard of it and assigned guards to the prince, who had up till then walked around New York unescorted.
WILLIAM BECAME A LIEUTENANT IN 1785 AND CAPTAIN OF HMS PEGASUS THE FOLLOWING YEAR. HE WAS GIVEN COMMAND OF HMS ANDROMEDA IN 1788,AND WAS PROMOTED TO REAR-ADMIRAL IN COMMAND OF HMS VALIANT THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
PRINCESS CHARLOTTE, DAUGHTER OF GEORGE IV, AND THE SECOND-IN-LINE TO THE THRONE, DIED IN CHILDBIRTH IN 1817. THE TRAGEDY LEFT WILLIAM’S OLDER BROTHER THE DUKE OF YORK SECOND-IN-LINE TO THE THRONE AND WITH THE DUKE OF YORK HAVING NO CHILDREN,WILLIAM WAS NOW THIRD IN LINE TO THE THRONE. THE DUKE OF YORK DIED IN 1827.IT WAS ALL BUT SURE WILLIAM WOULD NOW BE KING OF ENGLAND AS HIS OLDER BROTHER GEORGE IV WAS IN ILL HEALTH. GEORGE IV DIED ON JUNE 26 1830 AND THE DUKE OF CLARENCE ASCENDED THE THRONE, AT AGE 64, AS WILLIAM IV- THE OLDEST PERSON EVER TO ASSUME THE BRITISH THRONE.
DURING HIS REIGN, GREAT REFORMS WERE ENACTED BY PARLIAMENT INCLUDING THE FACTORY ACT, PREVENTING CHILD LABOR,THE ABOLITION ACT, EMANCIPATING SLAVES IN THE BRITISH COLONIES, AND THE POOR LAW, STANDARDISING PROVISIONS FOR THE DESTITUTE.
THE FATHER OF TEN ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN WILLIAM IV HAD NO LIVING LEGITIMATE CHILDREN, AND SO THE CROWN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM PASSED TO HIS NIECE PRINCESS VICTORIA. UNDER SALIC LAW,A WOMAN COULD NOT RULE HANOVER; THUS, THE HANOVERIAN CROWN WENT TO WILLIAM IV担 YOUNGER BROTHER, ERNEST AUGUSTUS, DUKE OF CUMBERLAND.
THE BUST IS BASED ON THE PAINTING IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM BY ANDREW MORTON (1802-1845). THE MONUMENTAL, 9’X 5′ PAINTING OF THE DUKE OF CLARENCE, LORD HIGH ADMIRAL WAS PAINTED IN 1827. IT IS SURROUNDED IN AN ENGLISH PARCEL GILT OAK FRAME. THE PAINTING WAS SOLD IN 2001 AT CHRISTIES, LONDON AND PURCHASED BY THE CRAMER MUSEUM. WILLIAM IV WEARS THE FOLLOWING ORDERS: THE MOST HONOURABLE ORDER OF THE BATH NECK BADGE. TOP BREAST STAR : ORDER OF THE GARTER. BELOW: THE ORDER OF THE BATH (MILITARY), AND THE ORDER OF THE GARTER BLUE SASH.
