DURING THE NAPOLEONIC WARS, FREDERICK AUGUSTUS III ELECTOR of SAXONY SIDED WITH PRUSSIA WHEN NAPOLEON ADVANCED AS FAR AS THURINGIA IN 1806. NAPOLEON AND THE FRENCH DEALT THE PRUSSIANS AND SAXONS A CRUSHING DEFEAT AT THE TWIN BATTLES OF JENA AND AUERSTEDT. WITH NAPOLEON ABOUT TO OCCUPY SAXONY, FREDERICK AUGUSTUS HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO CONCLUDE PEACE. ON DECEMBER 11 1806, A TREATY WAS SIGNED AND SAXONY WAS FORCED TO JOIN WITH NAPOLEON.
WITH NAPOLEON DEFEATED AT WATERLOO IN 1815, AND THE ELECTOR OF SAXONY CAPTURED AND IMPRISONED BY THE PRUSSIANS AND THEIR ALLIES. THE FUTURE OF SAXONY WAS LEFT TO THE CONGRESS OF VIENNA. THE ALLIES FINALLY AGREED TO DIVIDE SAXONY. FREDERICK AUGUSTUS DELAYED HIS AGREEMENT TO THE DIVISION OF HIS COUNTRY UNTIL AFTER HE WAS RELEASED FROM PRISON IN FEBRUARY 1815. SINCE THE ELECTOR HAD NO CHIOCE HE FINALLY GAVE IN AND 57% OF HIS LANDS WERE TURNED OVER TO PRUSSIA AND RUSSIA.
FREDERICK WAS CREATED THE NEW KING OF SAXONY AND STYLED, FREDERICK AUGUSTUS I. THE KING AND SAXONY HAD PEACE, AND WHEN HE RETURNED HOME TO SAXONY IN JULY 1815 HE WAS GREETED ENTHUSIASTICALLY THROUGHOUT THE LAND. FREDERICK AUGUSTUS I, QUICKLY SET ABOUT REBUILDING HIS KINGDOMS WAR DAMAGED ECONOMY, WITH SAXONY RICH AND ABUNDANT IN RESOURCES, COAL,SILVER, SOME OF THE BEST FARM LAND IN ALL OF GERMANY, AND SAXONY’S MANY PORCELAIN FACTORIES. THE ECONOMY OF SAXONY MADE A QUICK RECOVERY.
FREDERICK THEN BEGAN TO REBUILD HIS ARMY AND THE MANY REGIMENTS DEVASTATED DURING THE NAPOLEONIC WARS. THEY WERE SUPPLIED WITH NEW RECRUITS AND NEW UNIFORMS. IN 1821, THE SAXON GARDE-REITER REGIMENT CONSISTED OF TWO HEAVY AND TWO LIGHT REGIMENTS, FOUNDED IN 1680 AND GARRISONED IN DRESDEN. THEY WERE AMOUNG THE REGIMENTS THAT RECEIVED NEW UNIFORMS. THE NEW NAPOLEONIC STYLE HELMET WAS NOW MADE OF A BOILED LEATHER SKULL PAINTED BLACK WITH A TALL BEAR SKIN CREST. THE HELMET HARDWARE FIRE-GUILDED GOLD OVER BRASS, THE FRONT PLATE INITIALS “FAR”, FOR FREDERICK AUGUSTUS I. THIS HELMET WAS WORN ONLY UNTIL THE DEATH OF FREDERICK AUGUST I IN 1827. THE TUNIC WAS WHITE WITH KAISERBLUE PIPING AND COLLAR .THE EPPAULETS WERE GOLD WITH SILVER STARS AND BLUE UNDERSIDE. THE POUCH BELT GOLD WITH BLUE EDGING, THE BELT PLATE ON THE FRONT WAS SILVER,THE BUCKLES AND FITTINGS GOLD. THE POUCH WAS GOLD WITH SILVER CREST AND RAISED TRIM.
THE BUST IS BASED ON THE SAXON GARDE-REITER HELMET, MODEL 1821, IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM. THE HELMET IS EXTREMLY RARE AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
