THE PRUSSIAN HUSSARS WERE OF AVERAGE HEIGHT AND RODE ON SMALLER BUT AGILE HORSES. THEY WERE NOT AS DISCIPLINED AND TRAINED AS DRAGOONS AND NOT AS STRONG AND ROBUST AS THE CUIRASSIERS, BUT THE HUSSARS WERE THE MOST DASHING. THEY PARTICIPATED IN THE BOLDEST ACTIONS, WENT THROUGH THE MOST DIFFICULT SITUATIONS, SKIRMISHED AND SCOUTED. THE HUSSARS DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES IN NUMEROUS BATTLES, INCLUDING HEILSBERG, LEIPZIG, MOCKERN, LIGNY AND AT WATERLOO (BELLE-ALLIANCE).
IN 1806, THERE WERE 10 HUSSAR REGIMENTS, IN 1812 ONLY SIX.
IN 1815, PRUSSIA HAD A TOTAL OF 12 HUSSAR REGIMENTS. THE 11TH “2ND RHENISH” WAS FORMED FROM BERG TROOPS: 1ST, 2ND AND 3ND HUSSAR REGIMENT. THE 12TH HUSSAR REGIMENT WAS FORMED FROM TWO SAXON HUSSAR REGIMENTS AND SOME MILITIA.
ONE OF THE OLDEST REGIMENTS IN THE PRUSSIAN ARMY, REGIMENT NO. 4, WAS FORMED IN 1741. IN 1889, KAISER WILHELM I GRANTED THE HONORIFIC TITLE “VON SCHILL” TO THE 4TH HUSSARS IN HONOR OF PRUSSIAN HERO FERDINAND VON SCHILL,WHO WAS KILLED BY THE FRENCH IN 1809. IN 1910, THE REGIMENT WAS GARRISONED IN OHLAU (SILESIA) PRUSSIA. DURING WORLD WAR II, 60% OF THE TOWN WAS DESTROYED AND OHLAU BECAME PART OF POLAND.
REGIMENT NO. 4 WAS THE ONLY HUSSAR REGIMENT THAT WORE THE DISTINCTIVE AND NOW VERY RARE BROWN TUNIC.
