ERNST PAUL FRIEDRICH GEORG NIKOLAUS, DUKE OF SAXE-ALTENBURG, ELDEST SON OF GEORGE AND THE PRINCESS MARIE OF MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN. BORN THE 16TH OF SEPTEMBER 1826 AT HILDBURGHAUSEN SCHLOSS. HIS OLDER SISTER, PRINCESS MARIE VON SACHEN-ALTENBURG MARRIED THE FUTURE GEORGE V OF HANNOVER IN 1843.
ERNST STUDIED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF JENA AND AT LAUSANNE AND LEIPZIG WHERE HIS TRAINING WAS DEVOTED TO MILITARY SCIENCE. FROM 1851 TO 1853 HE SERVED WITH THE 1ST PRUSSIAN FOOT GUARDS AT POTDAM. IN 1853 MAJOR ERNST, MARRIED PRINCESS AGNES OF ANHALT-DESSAU. AMONG THE WEDDING GUESTS WAS KING FRIEDRICH WILHELM IV OF PRUSSIA.
IN 1853, HIS FATHER DUKE GEORGE BECAME WAS SERIOUSLY ILL AND THE GOVERNMENT TRANSFERRED TO ERNST. IN AUGUST OF 1853, DUKE GEORGE DIED AND HIS SON SUCCEEDED HIM AS HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS DUKE ERNST I von SACHEN-ALTENBURG, AT AGE 28.
ERNST WAS NAMED CHIEF OF THE 2ND HANNOVER JAGER BATAILLION IN 1861. HIS UNIFORM IS VERY- VERY DARK GREEN WITH BLACK VELVET COLLAR AND CUFF, THE PIPING IS ALSO BLACK. HE WEARS THE HANNOVER SILVER AND YELLOW SASH AROUND HIS WAIST. THE UNIFORM BUTTONS ARE SILVER, THE EPAULETTES SILVER WITH GOLD STARS. HE WEARS THE HANNOVERIAN ORDER OF ST. GEORGE BREAST STAR AND SASH WITH BADGE. THE SILK SASH IS DARK RED MOIRE. THE ORDER WAS FOUNDED BY KING ERNST AUGUST II OF HANNOVER IN 1839AND WAS LIMITED TO 16 MEMBERS BESIDES MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL HANNOVERIAN FAMILY.
ERNST SERVED IN THE 1864 WAR WITH DENMARK AND JOINED THE PRUSSIAN SIDE IN THE 1866 WAR WITH AUSTRIA. WHEN WAR BROKE OUT WITH FRANCE IN 1870 ERNST PARTICIPATED IN THE BATTLES OF SOISSONS, LOIGNY-POUPRY AT SEDAN AND BEAUMOINT.
ERNST WAS PRESENT AT THE PROCLAMATION OF KAISER WILHELM I AND CAN BE SEEN IN THE FAMOUS PAINTING OF THE KAISER BEING CROWNED, AT THE HALL OF MIRRORS VERSAILLES 1871. ERNST WAS ‘a la suit’ OF THE 12th THURINGISCHES- HUSSAR REGIMENT, HIS COMPLETE UNIFORM FOR THIS REGIMENT IS IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
THE BUST IS BASED ON THE PAINTING OF THE DUKE BY HEINRICH JONATHAN FINKE 1816-1868, SIGNED AND DATED 1864. THE PAINTING WAS A GIFT TO THE DUKES SISTER QUEEN MARIE AND KING GEORGE V OF HANNOVER. IT WAS AT MARIENBURG CASTLE UNTIL SOLD BY SOTHEBY担 IN 2005. THE PAINTING NOW IS ON DISPLAY IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
