AFTER A GENERAL LEGAL AND MILITARY EDUCATION, HE GAINED PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE OF MILITARY AFFAIRS WHEN HE SERVED IN THE LIFE-GUARD PREOBRAZHENSKY AND HUSSAR REGIMENTS. HE REACHED THE RANK OF COLONEL IN THE RUSSIAN ARMY, A TITLE HE RETAINED UNTIL THE END OF HIS LIFE.
NICHOLAS CAME TO THE THRONE AFTER THE UNEXPECTED DEATH OF HIS FATHER IN 1894, HE WAS ONLY 26 YEARS OLD. IN THAT SAME YEAR HE MARRIED ALEXANDRA OF HESSE-DARMSTADT (1872-1918). NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA AND THEIR FAMILY, SPENT MOST OF THEIR LIVES AT THEIR PALACES IN ST. PETERSBURG.
THE CHEVALIER PALACE GUARDS, HORSE GUARDS REGIMENT WAS FOUNDED IN 1721 AS THE KRONSCHLOTY DRAGOONS REGIMENT. IN 1725 THE UNIT WAS NAMED LIFE GUARD REGIMENT AND IN 1800, THE REGIMENT WAS INCORPORATED WITH THE RUSSIAN HEAVY CAVALRY GUARDS TO FORM THE CHEVALIER GUARDS.
THE REGIMENT SAW ITS FIRST COMBAT IN THE BATTLE OF AUSTERLITZ, 1805. THE MEN OF THE REGIMENT FOUGHT BRAVELY, COVERING THE RETREAT OF THE PREOBRAZHENSKY AND SEMYONOVSKY REGIMENTS OF THE RUSSIAN GUARD INFANTRY. THE CHEVALIER GUARDS WERE COUNTER CHARGED BY THE FRENCH HORSE GRENADIERS OF THE OLD GUARD, WHO INFLICTED HEAVY CASUALTIES AMOUNG THE RUSSIANS.
IN 1812, AT THE BATTLE OF BORODINO, THE REGIMENT DISTINGUISHED ITSELF, BUT LOST THEIR COLONEL EARLY IN THE BATTLE. HOWEVER, IN CONCERT WITH THE LIFE GUARD HORSE REGIMENT, THEY EFFECTIVELY STOPPED THE DECISIVE CHARGE OF SAXON CUIRASSIERS AND DEFEATED THE FRENCH HORSE CARABINIERS. THE NEXT YEAR, 1813, THE REGIMENT TOOK PART IN ITS LAST BATTLES IN THE NAPOLEONIC WARS WITH ACTION AT LUTZEN, KULM AND LEIPZIG.
THE 1ST AND 4TH SQUADRONS WERE THE REGIMENTS TALLEST MEN AND BECAUSE OF THEIR LOYALTY AND SIZE THEY WERE SELECTED FOR DUTY WITH THE PALACE GUARDS. IN 1894, CZAR NICHOLAS II BECAME CHIEF OF THE REGIMENT. HE IS SHOWN ON THE BUST WEARING THE PALACE GUARD SUPREVESTE, ONLY WORN ON PALACE DUTY, AND THE RUSSIAN DOUBLE EAGLE HELMET.
IN AUGUST OF 1914, CZAR NICHOLAS II APPROVED THE MOBLILIZATION OF HIS RUSSIAN ARMY WHICH MARKED THE FIRST FATAL STEP INTO WORLD WAR I AND THUS THE DEMISE FOUR YEARS LATER, OF THE ROMANOV DYNASTY AFTER 305 YEARS OF RULE. THE BUST IS BASED ON THE RUSSIAN CHEVALIER GUARD HELMET IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
