THOMAS WENTWORTH 1593-1641 1ST EARL OF STRAFFORD BMM19

$72.95

THOMAS WENTWORTH (1593-1641), EARL OF STRAFFORD, LORD LIEUTENANT OF IRELAND, GENERAL OF THE KINGS FORCE, KNIGHT OF THE MOST NOBLE ORDER OF THE GARTER.
PROBABLY THE MOST SIGNIFICANT POLITICAL FIGURE IN THE YEARS LEADING UP TO THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR. THOMAS CAME FROM AN OLD YORKSHIRE FAMILY, THE SON OF SIR WILLIAM WENTWORTH BT. OF WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE AND GAWTHORPE. IN 1614, HE ENTERED PARLIAMENT AS M.P. FOR YORK, AND OVER THE NEXT FOURTEEN YEARS WAS A CONSISTENT OPPONENT OF THE EXCESSIVE USE OF THE ROYAL PREROGATIVE. HOWEVER, IN 1628 HE CHANGED HIS ALLEGIANCE TO THE KING, WHO CREATED HIM VISCOUNT WENTWORTH AND LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL OF THE NORTH. IN 1632, HE WAS APPOINTED LORD DEPUTY OF IRELAND WHERE HE RECONSTITUTED THE ARMY AND CURBED LAWLESSNESS. IN 1639, HE WAS MADE EARL OF STRAFFORD AND LORD LIEUTENANT OF IRELAND, AND BECAME CHARLES I’S CHIEF ADVISOR. IN MAY 1640, HE OFFERED TO LEAD AN IRISH ARMY AGAINST SCOTLAND, BUT FOLLOWING THE CALLING OF THE LONG PARLIAMENT HE WAS IMPEACHED AND EXECUTED.
STRAFFORD WAS AN IMPORTANT PATRON OF VAN DYCK, WHO PAINTED THREE SIGNIFICANT IMAGES OF HIM, ALL BASED IN SOME RESPECTS ON PAINTINGS THEN IN LONDON BY TITIAN.
THE BUST IS BASED ON THE SIR ANTHONY VAN DYKE (1599-1641) PAINTING OF STRAFFORD IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM. AQUIRED SOTHEBY’S LONDON 2002.
THE PAINTING DERIVES FROM THE CELEBRATED PORTRAIT AT PETWORTH PAINTED BY VAN DYCK IN 1636 DURING STRAFFORD’S BRIEF RETURN TO LONDON FROM DUBLIN. IT WAS PAINTED FOR LADY CARLISLE AND PASSED TO HER BROTHER, THE EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND. A FULL LENGTH PORTRAIT SHOWING THE STRAFFORD IN THE SAME POSE WAS PAINTED FOR LORD NEWCASTLE AND IS NOW AT WELBECK.
BEFORE THE STRAFFORD PAINTING PASSED TO THE DISTINGUISHED COLLECTION OF LORD BROCKET AT BRAMSHILL IN THE 1930’S, IT HUNG AT WARWICK CASTLE AND BELONGED TO FRANCES, COUNTESS OF WARWICK (1861-1939) WHO INHERITED THE ESTATES OF HER GRANDFATHER, HENRY VISCOUNT MAYNARD. THE MAYNARDS WERE ROYALIST SUPPORTERS AT THE TIME OF THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR, AND THE PORTRAIT MAY HAVE BELONGED TO THEM IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY.
