THE FRENCH IMPERIAL GARDE WAS FIRST FORMED IN 1563. THE IMPERIAL GARDE OF NAPOLEON HAD ITS BEGINNINGS AS AN ESCORT SQUADRON CALLED THE CORPS OF GUIDES. THE CORPS OF GUIDES ACCOMPANIED HIM IN THE 1796-1797 ITALIAN AND EGYPT CAMPAIGNS. ON BECOMING FIRST CONSUL IN 1799, NAPOLEON EXPANED THE GARDE TO INCLUDE A SMALL HORSE AND FOOT CORPS OF ELITE SOLDERS, CALLED THE CONSULAR GARDE. THE CORPS TOOK PART IN THE BATTLE OF MARENGO.
THE IMPERIAL GARDE, TO WHICH IT WAS CONVERTED ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE EMPIRE, WAS AT FIRST ABOUT THE STRENGTH OF A DIVISION. THE GARDE TOOK PART IN THE BATTLES OF AUSTERLITZ AND JENA. AFTER THE CONQUEST OF PRUSSIA, NAPOLEON AUGMENTED IT, AND DIVIDED IT INTO THE “OLD GARDE” AND THE “YOUNG GARDE”. THE IMPERIAL GARDE HAD GROWN TO 57,000 BY 1811-1812 AND TO 81,000 IN 1813.
THE GARDE PRESERVED ITS GENERAL CHARACTER AS A corps d’elite OF VETERANS TO THE LAST. BUT FROM 1813, THE “YOUNG GARDE” WAS RECRUITRD DIRECTLY FROM THE BEST OF THE ANNUAL CONSCRIPT CONTINGENT.
AFTER THE FALL OF NAPOLEON AT WATERLOO, THE GARDE WAS DISBANNED AND REPLACED BY THE GARDE ROYALE OF LOUIS XVIII. THIS WAS A SELECTED FIGHTING CORPS, IT TOO WAS DISBANNED AT THE JULY REVOLUTION.
IN 1854, NAPOLEON III REVIVED THE GARDE AND CREATED HIS GARDE IN THE IMAGE OF THE FIRST EMPIRE. THE GARDE INFANTRY INCLUDED A REGIMENT OF GRENADIERS AND A REGIMENT OF ZOUAVES. THE CAVALRY CONSISTED OF TWO REGIMENTS OF CUIRASSIERS, DRAGOONS, LANCERS AND GUIDES. IN 1855, THE IMPERIAL GARDE WAS GREATLY EXPANDED.
THE UNIFORM DEPLECTED ON THE BUST WAS AQUIRED FROM THE MUSEUM MILITAIRE de BOURBON-LANCY, ANGERS, FRANCE IN MAY OF 2003. IT IS ON DISPLAY IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
THE UNIFORM PELISSE WAS WORN BY PIERRE ANGE-LERGUES WHO WAS BORN IN 1831 AT VERSAILLES, FRANCE. PIERRE JOINED THE FRENCH ARMY IN 1849. IN 1853 HE WAS EXCEPTED INTO THE IMPERIAL GARDE AND NOMINATED TO TROMPETER OF THE GUIDES. HE MUSTERED OUT OF THE ARMY IN 1856.
